By their very nature, telecoms masts and antennas are one of the most vulnerable structures to lightning direct strikes....
Many of these masts are in rural areas in close proximity of livestock or in built up urban areas on schools, offices and alike (densly inhabitted).
Less obvious is their propensity to subject nearby equipment and passing traffic to high levels of peak current and EMP (electromagnetic pulse). Therefore, systems must be carefully designed to avoid subjecting livestock, and passing people from dangerous 'step' potentials, which can kill.
For electrical equipment, the EMP hazards are significant.
